Walkthrough — simon-ionization-excess

Discovery notes, not a cleaned proof. Beats: refs/walkthrough-style.md.

  1. What was actually missing — a replayable certificate for the 2025 HPS numbers, and any finite handle that moves a printed inequality. The bounded-excess conjecture itself is the missing theorem. The leftover degree of freedom in HPS §7 is the interval on which they maximise a1(N/Z)a_1(N/Z): they wrote [β3−1,5/2][ \beta_3^{-1},5/2] and then evaluated only the left endpoint.

  2. Named false starts — beating 1.11851.1185 by taking s>3s>3 (not proved); replacing the LT factor 1.4561.456 by an unreplayed 2024 claim; improving Nam’s β\beta lower bound far enough to matter (the ionization upper bound uses 1/β1/\beta, so an upper bound on β\beta is the wrong direction).

  3. The useful failure — replaying a1(x)a_1(x) on HPS’s stated interval [b(3),5/2][b(3),5/2] shows the maximum is at x=5/2x=5/2, value 3.89949…3.89949\ldots, not at the left. Their 3.8933.893 is only the left-endpoint number. The printed 3.903.90 still covers 5/25/2, so Prop. 2.5 is safe. The failure teaches that the interval, not the algebra of b(3)b(3), is the handle.

  4. The click — Prop. 2.5 is for Z≥4Z\ge4. Lieb already gives N<2Z+1N<2Z+1, hence N/Z<2+1/Z≤9/4N/Z<2+1/Z\le9/4. On [b(3),9/4][b(3),9/4] the maximum of a1a_1 is at the left, and a1<3.892a_1<3.892. The extras are unchanged. At Z=4Z=4 the collected Z1/3Z^{1/3} remainder is <3.9781<3.9781, which beats the printed 44.

  5. The argument — same HPS chain: weight ∣x∣3|x|^3, Lemma 6.4 with κ\kappa from FHJN 1.4561.456, λ=(5/12)1/3\lambda=(5/12)^{1/3}, contradiction assumption N≥β3−1Z+a1Z1/3+⋯N\ge\beta_3^{-1}Z+a_1 Z^{1/3}+\cdots. The only change is the Lieb interval used to bound a1(N/Z)a_1(N/Z), plus exact b(3)b(3) in place of 1.11851.1185 inside that estimate. No new β3\beta_3.

  6. Computer search — replay_hps.py / tighten_hps.py (mpmath intervals), verify_remainder.py (stdlib math, no shared code), verify_b3.c and verify_b3.rs (closed form vs ternary max of (1+ts−1)/(1+ts)(1+t^{s-1})/(1+t^s)). Hylleraas exact rationals for H−H^-. Lean cubic witnesses for the printed b(3)b(3) enclosure. UHF table is heuristic.

  7. Proven vs still open — printed HPS remainders 2.962.96, 3.903.90, 44 move to 2.9532.953, 3.8923.892, 3.97813.9781. Leading 1.11851.1185 does not move. N0(Z)−ZN_0(Z)-Z bounded is open. N0(1)=2N_0(1)=2 is a replay. He−^- binding is residue. 1984 10(a) is open.

Later the same day — try to move 1.1185

  1. What was actually missing — Proposition 4.5 pulls min⁡f\min f out of a weighted average of f(t)f(t). Figure 2 already says that minimum is not sharp. The leftover degree of freedom is a global lower bound on that average, or a proof that Lemma 4.3 survives past s=3s=3, or an integer bound at a concrete Z>1Z>1. A remainder shave is not the handle.

  2. Named false starts — s>3s>3 by the same IMS/Hardy chain (the improved Hardy constant is 9/49/4, so cH−s2/4≥0c_H-s^2/4\ge0 only for s≤3s\le3); using Nam’s β\beta upper end (wrong direction); excluding N=4N=4 at Z=2Z=2 by pair geometry or a new Lieb weight; treating hydrogen uniqueness as new; a tail polynomial that claimed 1.11681.1168.

  3. The useful failure — Is(ν)I_s(\nu) on two-shell dipoles goes negative the moment s>3s>3 (exact −1025/2048-1025/2048 at s=4s=4). So b(4)≈1.083b(4)\approx1.083 cannot be fed into Theorem 2.2. Separately, h(0,1)≈0.991h(0,1)\approx0.991 on the proposed tail lift sits above the HPS power-law trial 0.9210.921. The lift was claiming a lower bound larger than an explicit measure. That kills 1.11681.1168 and teaches that a compact-window bound is not a global bound unless the tail estimate is actually a lower bound.

  4. The click — after Newton, I/DI/D is an average of f(t)f(t) and cannot put all pair-weight at t=t0t=t_0 (self-pairs and non-adjacent ratios). On measures whose DD-mass has aspect ≤4\le4, a mid-radius Rayleigh plus a total-variation reweighting error does certify Q≥0.901924Q\ge0.901924. The numerical minimizer has aspect ∼3.50\sim3.50, so it lives in that class. The jump 1.1185→1.10871.1185\to1.1087 is real inside the class and empty for Theorem 2.2.

  5. The argument that did not close — to replace 1.11851.1185 one still needs Q≥γ>1/b(3)Q\ge\gamma>1/b(3) for every radial probability, or a proof that a minimizer has aspect ≤4\le4. First variation for a probability is V(r)=(Q/2)(r2+D)V(r)=(Q/2)(r^2+D) on the support. Geometric t0t_0-chains stay above 0.9370.937; a two-window split with cross terms at min⁡f\min f returns min⁡f\min f. Neither is a lift. Finite ZZ: the tetrahedron gives α4,2⋅3<2\alpha_{4,2}\cdot3<2 (54<6454<64), so s=2s=2 pair geometry cannot beat Lieb at helium.

  6. Computer search — verify_beta3.c exhaustive faces (n=18n=18, 262143262143 faces, 00 singular, min⁡mTMm>0.0128\min m^TMm>0.0128); independent Rust n=16n=16 rebuild; s_gt_3.py interval + rational s=4s=4; verify_tetra.c / .py; aspect_try.py chains and random atomics; q1 remainder scripts left untouched.

  7. Proven vs still open — compact Q≥0.901924Q\ge0.901924 on aspect ≤4\le4 is certified and is not a published-record dent. s>3s>3 is closed along HPS Lemma 4.3. Finite-ZZ integer bounds unchanged (Lieb). Leading 1.11851.1185 unchanged. N0(Z)−ZN_0(Z)-Z bounded open. 1.11681.1168 withdrawn.

Later the same day — lift the aspect-12 class

  1. What was actually missing — a global lower bound on QQ strictly above min⁡f\min f, or a proof that a minimizer of β3\beta_3 has bounded aspect. The compact γ\gamma at R=12R=12 was already 0.8995260.899526, so 1/γ=1.11170<1.11851/\gamma=1.11170<1.1185 inside that class. The degree of freedom was the large-aspect measures.

  2. Named false starts — treating existence of a continuum minimizer as the only lift (the first-variation identity at large rr is ψ(r)∼(1−Q)r2/2>0\psi(r)\sim(1-Q)r^2/2>0, which bounds support of a critical point but does not, by itself, bound QQ for a non-critical tail); using the aspect-≤4\le 4 number 1.10871.1087 unrestricted; two-window p12p_{12} (still collapses); s>3s>3 and finite-ZZ integers (still residue); a signed Toeplitz symbol that dips below min⁡f\min f.

  3. The useful failure — a forced-aspect-1212 search can sit at Q≈0.9226<12/13Q\approx 0.9226<12/13 if it is not mass-stationary (relative first-variation error 0.0650.065). The algebra Q>12/13Q>12/13 is only for mass-critical points that use both ends. Incomplete optimisation is not a counterexample. The R=12R=12 “singular” faces are mixed-sign residual skips, not a hole in copositivity.

  4. The click — mass-optimisation on a fixed finite set of radii always exists, and that point is mass-stationary. If the used aspect stays ≥12\ge 12, the moment identities force Q>12/13>γ12Q>12/13>\gamma_{12}. If an endpoint is dropped, the used aspect falls into the compact class. Every atomic measure is at least as large as its mass-opt, hence Q≥γ12Q\ge\gamma_{12}. No global existence theorem is required.

  5. The argument — Theorem 4.2, radial QQ. Compact cert on aspect ≤12\le 12. Mass-opt dichotomy on aspect ≥12\ge 12. Weak QQ-continuity on compact radial support (finite spherical shells). Truncation of a finite-DD measure (r2r^2 is UI for that one measure). Same §7 chain with β3≥γ12\beta_3\ge\gamma_{12}, Lieb 9/49/4 on Z≥4Z\ge 4, extras recomputed. Printed leading 1.11181.1118 is a round-up of 1.111696…1.111696\ldots.

  6. Computer search — stored R=12R=12, n=22n=22 faces (copositive, 55 skips); stdlib reconstruction of γ=ϕ−Pmax⁡(1−fmin⁡)\gamma=\phi-P_{\max}(1-f_{\min}); C and Rust on the 12/1312/13 grid and the V(1)V(1), V(R)V(R) identities; mass-opt scan, min Q=0.923274>12/13Q=0.923274>12/13; 6464-atom trial Q<12/13Q<12/13 (upper bound on β3\beta_3 only); interval §7 in tighten_leading.py.

  7. Proven vs still open — printed leading 1.11851.1185 moves to 1.11181.1118. Remainders 2.9532.953, 3.8923.892, 3.97813.9781 stay. Aspect-≤4\le 4 1.10871.1087 is not unrestricted. 1.11681.1168 stays withdrawn. s>3s>3 closed along Lemma 4.3. Finite-ZZ integers unchanged (Lieb). N0(Z)−ZN_0(Z)-Z bounded open.

Later the same day — raise the compact γ\gamma

  1. What was actually missing — after the mass-opt lift, the leading coefficient is 1/γR1/\gamma_R for the smallest compact class whose cut R/(R+1)R/(R+1) still exceeds γR\gamma_R. At R=12R=12 that γ\gamma was 0.8995260.899526 because the face target sat at 0.90550.9055 and the Pmax⁡P_{\max} tax was 0.0060.006. The degree of freedom was the target and the number of bins, not a new tail polynomial.

  2. Named false starts — quoting 1.10871.1087 unrestricted (the R=4R=4 cut is 4/54/5); a moment-only R=4R=4 lift (Hölder leaves a nonempty abstract (Q,D)(Q,D) hole); replacing P(1−fmin⁡)P(1-f_{\min}) by a spread (vertices have λ=1\lambda=1); s>3s>3 and finite-ZZ integers (still residue); recycling the withdrawn 1.11681.1168.

  3. The useful failure — two-atomic mass-critical Q(R)Q(R) sits far above R/(R+1)R/(R+1) (at R=4R=4, Q≈0.970Q\approx 0.970), so the positivity cut is loose on 22-atoms and still the only closed large-aspect bound. Forced-endpoint kk-atomic mass-opt stays above 0.920.92. That teaches that the jump is in the compact certificate, not in a sharper cut.

  4. The click — SLSQP φ\varphi at R=12R=12, n=22n=22 is 0.906920.90692, already above the certified 0.90550.9055. Raising the target is a re-run of the same faces. Dropping the split from 1212 to 1010 and taking n=26n=26 shrinks PP enough that γ=0.904414\gamma=0.904414 and 10/11>γ10/11> \gamma. Then 1/γ=1.105688<1.1057<1.11181/\gamma=1.105688<1.1057<1.1118, and the unrestricted number sits below the old class-only 1.10871.1087.

  5. The argument — Theorem 4.2, radial QQ. Compact cert on aspect ≤10\le 10. Mass-opt dichotomy on aspect ≥10\ge 10: Q>10/11Q>10/11. Weak QQ-continuity on compact radial support. Truncation of a finite-DD measure. Same §7 chain with β3≥γ10\beta_3\ge\gamma_{10}, Lieb 9/49/4 on Z≥4Z\ge 4, extras recomputed.

  6. Computer search — stored R=10R=10, n=26n=26 faces (67,108,86367{,}108{,}863, copositive, 2323 skips, min⁡m⊤Mm>4⋅10−4\min m^\top Mm>4\cdot 10^{-4}); independent Rust Cramer re-enum of the same matrix, same copositivity and the same 2323 skips; stdlib rebuild of AA to 10−1510^{-15}; C and Rust on the 10/1110/11 grid; mass-opt scan, min Q=0.9249>10/11Q=0.9249>10/11; interval §7 in tighten_leading.py. Intermediate certified rows (R=12R=12 n=22n=22 at 0.906850.90685, R=10R=10 n=24n=24 at 0.90840.9084) sit between 1.11181.1118 and 1.10571.1057.

  7. Proven vs still open — printed leading 1.11181.1118 moves to 1.10571.1057. Remainders 2.9532.953, 3.8923.892, 3.97813.9781 stay. Aspect-≤4\le 4 1.10871.1087 is no longer the best unrestricted figure and is still not used as a class-only quote. 1.11681.1168 stays withdrawn. Finite-ZZ integers unchanged (Lieb). N0(Z)−ZN_0(Z)-Z bounded open.

Later the same day — more bins at aspect 10

  1. What was actually missing — after q4 the compact γ\gamma at R=10R=10, n=26n=26 sat 0.00470.0047 below the cut 10/1110/11. The leftover was the Pmax⁡P_{\max} tax, which shrinks as q=R1/n→1q=R^{1/n}\to 1. A smaller split RR cannot help while the large-aspect bound stays R/(R+1)R/(R+1): at R=9R=9 that cut is 0.90.9, so the leading is at least 1.11111.1111.

  2. Named false starts — R≤9R\le 9 with the existing cut; quoting the aspect-≤4\le 4 class-only 1.10871.1087; a moment-only sharper cut; s>3s>3 and finite-ZZ integers; recycling the withdrawn 1.11681.1168.

  3. The useful failure — R=9.5R=9.5, n=26n=26 predicts 1.10531.1053, but γ\gamma sits 4⋅10−54\cdot 10^{-5} below the cut 9.5/10.59.5/10.5. That row is too tight to be the first certificate. The jump is more bins at the same split, not a fractional RR.

  4. The click — SLSQP φ\varphi at R=10R=10, n=30n=30 is 0.910460.91046. Target 0.91030.9103 minus the PP error 0.004060.00406 gives γ=0.906238\gamma=0.906238, and 10/11>γ10/11>\gamma. Then 1/γ=1.103463<1.1035<1.10571/\gamma=1.103463<1.1035<1.1057.

  5. The argument — Theorem 4.2, radial QQ. Compact cert on aspect ≤10\le 10 with 3030 bins. Mass-opt dichotomy on aspect ≥10\ge 10: Q>10/11Q>10/11. Weak QQ-continuity on compact radial support. Truncation of a finite-DD measure. Same §7 chain with β3≥γ10\beta_3\ge\gamma_{10}, Lieb 9/49/4 on Z≥4Z\ge 4, extras recomputed.

  6. Computer search — stored R=10R=10, n=30n=30 faces (1,073,741,8231{,}073{,}741{,}823, copositive, 420420 skips, min⁡m⊤Mm>5⋅10−4\min m^\top Mm>5\cdot 10^{-4}); intermediate n=28n=28 row at printed 1.10461.1046; stdlib rebuild of AA to 10−1510^{-15}; C and Rust on the 10/1110/11 grid; mass-opt scan, min Q=0.9249>10/11Q=0.9249>10/11; interval §7 in tighten_leading.py.

  7. Proven vs still open — printed leading 1.10571.1057 moves to 1.10351.1035. Remainders 2.9532.953, 3.8923.892, 3.97813.9781 stay. R≤9R\le 9 with the mass-opt cut is residue. 1.11681.1168 stays withdrawn. Finite-ZZ integers unchanged (Lieb). N0(Z)−ZN_0(Z)-Z bounded open.

Later the same day — more bins past n=30n=30

  1. What was actually missing — after q5 the compact γ\gamma at R=10R=10, n=30n=30 sat 0.002850.00285 below the cut 10/1110/11. The leftover was still the Pmax⁡P_{\max} tax. R≤9R\le 9 with Q>R/(R+1)Q>R/(R+1) cannot beat 1.10351.1035: the cut is 0.90.9, so the leading is at least 1.11111.1111.

  2. Named false starts — R≤9R\le 9 with the existing cut; a fractional split R=9.8R=9.8 as the first certificate; s>3s>3 and finite-ZZ integers; recycling the withdrawn 1.11681.1168.

  3. The useful failure — R=9.8R=9.8, n=32n=32 predicts 1.102381.10238, but γ\gamma sits 2.8⋅10−42.8\cdot 10^{-4} below the cut 9.8/10.89.8/10.8. That is more slack than q5's rejected R=9.5R=9.5 row and still tighter than R=10R=10. The jump is more bins at the same split.

  4. The click — SLSQP φ\varphi at R=10R=10, n=32n=32 is 0.910980.91098. Target 0.91080.9108 minus the PP error 0.003810.00381 gives γ=0.906992\gamma=0.906992, and 10/11>γ10/11>\gamma. Then 1/γ=1.102546<1.1026<1.10351/\gamma=1.102546<1.1026<1.1035.

  5. The argument — Theorem 4.2, radial QQ. Compact cert on aspect ≤10\le 10 with 3232 bins. Mass-opt dichotomy on aspect ≥10\ge 10: Q>10/11Q>10/11. Weak QQ-continuity on compact radial support. Truncation of a finite-DD measure. Same §7 chain with β3≥γ10\beta_3\ge\gamma_{10}, Lieb 9/49/4 on Z≥4Z\ge 4, extras recomputed.

  6. Computer search — stored R=10R=10, n=32n=32 faces (4,294,967,2954{,}294{,}967{,}295, copositive, 11571157 skips, min⁡m⊤Mm>6⋅10−4\min m^\top Mm>6\cdot 10^{-4}); stdlib rebuild of AA to 10−1510^{-15}; C and Rust on the 10/1110/11 grid; mass-opt scan, min Q=0.9249>10/11Q=0.9249>10/11; interval §7 in tighten_leading.py.

  7. Proven vs still open — printed leading 1.10351.1035 moves to 1.10261.1026. Remainders 2.9532.953, 3.8923.892, 3.97813.9781 stay. R≤9R\le 9 with the mass-opt cut is residue. 1.11681.1168 stays withdrawn. Finite-ZZ integers unchanged (Lieb). N0(Z)−ZN_0(Z)-Z bounded open.

Later the same day — past n=32n=32

  1. What was actually missing — after q6 the compact γ\gamma at R=10R=10, n=32n=32 sat 0.002100.00210 below the cut 10/1110/11. The leftover was still the Pmax⁡P_{\max} tax. R≤9R\le 9 with Q>R/(R+1)Q>R/(R+1) cannot beat 1.10261.1026: the cut is 0.90.9, so the leading is at least 1.11111.1111.

  2. Named false starts — R≤9R\le 9 with the existing cut; treating R=9.8R=9.8 n=33n=33 as the first certificate (predicted γ\gamma sits 3⋅10−53\cdot 10^{-5} above 9.8/10.89.8/10.8); a PSD+NN shortcut on MM (two negative eigenvalues; zeroing off-diagonals does not restore PSD); s>3s>3 and finite-ZZ integers; recycling the withdrawn 1.11681.1168.

  3. The useful failure — R=9.8R=9.8, n=32n=32 still predicts 1.102381.10238 with γ\gamma 2.8⋅10−42.8\cdot 10^{-4} below the cut. Raising nn at that split pushes γ\gamma over the cut, so the unrestricted number would bind at 1.102041.10204 and inherit a hairline slack. The safer jump is more bins at the proven split R=10R=10.

  4. The click — SLSQP φ\varphi at R=10R=10, n=33n=33 is 0.911220.91122. Target 0.91110.9111 minus the PP error 0.003690.00369 gives γ=0.907407\gamma=0.907407, and 10/11>γ10/11>\gamma. Then 1/γ=1.102041<1.1021<1.10261/\gamma=1.102041<1.1021<1.1026.

  5. The argument — Theorem 4.2, radial QQ. Compact cert on aspect ≤10\le 10 with 3333 bins. Mass-opt dichotomy on aspect ≥10\ge 10: Q>10/11Q>10/11. Weak QQ-continuity on compact radial support. Truncation of a finite-DD measure. Same §7 chain with β3≥γ10\beta_3\ge\gamma_{10}, Lieb 9/49/4 on Z≥4Z\ge 4, extras recomputed.

  6. Computer search — stored R=10R=10, n=33n=33 faces (8,589,934,5918{,}589{,}934{,}591, copositive, 25182518 skips, min⁡m⊤Mm>4⋅10−4\min m^\top Mm>4\cdot 10^{-4}); stdlib rebuild of AA to 10−1510^{-15}; C and Rust on the 10/1110/11 grid; mass-opt scan, min Q=0.9249>10/11Q=0.9249>10/11; interval §7 in tighten_leading.py.

  7. Proven vs still open — printed leading 1.10261.1026 moves to 1.10211.1021. Remainders 2.9532.953, 3.8923.892, 3.97813.9781 stay. R≤9R\le 9 with the mass-opt cut is residue. 1.11681.1168 stays withdrawn. Finite-ZZ integers unchanged (Lieb). N0(Z)−ZN_0(Z)-Z bounded open.

Later the same day — past n=33n=33

  1. What was actually missing — after q7 the compact γ\gamma at R=10R=10, n=33n=33 sat 0.001680.00168 below the cut 10/1110/11. The leftover was still the Pmax⁡P_{\max} tax, plus unused φ\varphi: SLSQP and the stored face min⁡φ\min\varphi sit at 0.911220.91122 while the certified target is 0.91110.9111. R≤9R\le 9 with Q>R/(R+1)Q>R/(R+1) cannot beat 1.10211.1021: the cut is 0.90.9, so the leading is at least 1.11111.1111.

  2. 3. The useful failure — R=9.9R=9.9 with the cut binding prints 1.101011.10101, which is 1.1011>1.10101.1011>1.1010. Chebyshev does not reopen R≤9R\le 9. The live line is more bins at the proven split, if a predicted γ\gamma actually prints below 1.10101.1010 and faces certify.

  4. The click — SLSQP φ\varphi at R=10R=10, n=37n=37 is 0.9120820.912082. Target 0.91190.9119 minus the PP error 0.0032940.003294 gives γ=0.908606\gamma=0.908606, and 10/11>γ10/11>\gamma. Then 1/γ=1.100587<1.1006<1.10101/\gamma=1.100587<1.1006<1.1010. That is a prediction. Faces have not certified it.

  5. The argument — same as q11 if faces certify: Theorem 4.2, radial QQ, compact cert on aspect ≤10\le 10 with 3737 bins, mass-opt cut Q>10/11Q>10/11, same §7 chain.

  6. Computer search — q11 replay; stored SLSQP scan; n=37n=37 matrix assembled at target 0.91190.9119. Face dump stopped at slowest shard 29.6%29.6\% of 237−12^{37}-1. Scanned faces copositive, min⁡φ=0.912085>0.9119\min\varphi=0.912085>0.9119. Remaining masks not enumerated.

  7. Proven vs still open — printed leading still 1.10101.1010. Predicted 1.10061.1006 is not a bound. Remainders 2.9532.953, 3.8923.892, 3.97813.9781 stay. R≤9R\le 9 with the mass-opt cut is residue. 1.11681.1168 stays withdrawn. Finite-ZZ integers unchanged (Lieb). N0(Z)−ZN_0(Z)-Z bounded open.

Later — finish n=37n=37 without the mask dump

  1. What was actually missing — q12 assembled the n=37n=37 matrix and predicted printed 1.10061.1006, then stopped the 237−12^{37}-1 Gauss-Jordan dump at 30%. The leftover was a certificate that visits every face without storing them or holding four shards in RAM.

  2. Named false starts — resuming the four q12 shards (a worktree wipe had already killed a live dump once); PD pruning of large principal submatrices (two negative eigenvalues, λmin⁡≈−18\lambda_{\min}\approx-18 even after dropping eight bins); the PSD+NN split (still fails); R≤9R\le 9 with Q>R/(R+1)Q>R/(R+1).

  3. The useful failure — the naive mask loop is O(k3)O(k^3) per subset. At n=24n=24 that is a million masks a second; at n=37n=37 it is days. The worktree itself disappeared under the first Gray run at 16 minutes. An incomplete copositive scan is still not a bound.

  4. The click — binary-reflected Gray order changes one index per step, so MS−1M_S^{-1} is a rank-1 / border update. Same copositivity test, O(k2)O(k^2) per face, about 2 MB RSS, one thread. On the stored n=26n=26 matrix it matches the old dump (same 187266187266 interior points, same min⁡m⊤Mm\min m^\top Mm, same min⁡φ\min\varphi).

2026-09-07 — the decomposition was still available

  1. What was missing — the 37-bin target still had unused room, but another full face enumeration was expensive. The degree of freedom was the positive-semidefinite part of the compact matrix. The existing notes had tested two choices for that matrix, not all choices.

  2. Named false starts — the earlier positive-off-diagonal removal and spectral clipping both failed. Those were useful probes, but they did not prove that a PSD-plus-nonnegative decomposition was impossible. The new SDP also returned optimal_inaccurate; accepting that status would have left a gap.

  3. The useful failure — the failed formulas suggested optimizing the decomposition itself. The solver warning made a rational certificate necessary. It was possible to use rational bin edges and a slightly weaker rational floor for the kernel while retaining enough slack.

  4. The click — maximize a common positive margin for the matrix and its entrywise remainder. At target 0.9120.912, this produced a candidate that survived rational rounding. A second witness came from a rounded Gram factor. The two finite proofs could then use different arithmetic.

  5. The argument — Python proved positive definiteness by exact elimination. Rust verified the separate sum-of-squares witness using outward integer intervals. Both reconstructed every bin pair and proved the reweighting loss small enough for β3≥0.9087\beta_3\ge0.9087. The existing mass-stationary argument at aspect ten supplied the global extension. The HPS constants simplified because the powers of π\pi cancel, leaving rational power comparisons.

  6. Computer search — one 37-bin SDP, followed by two finite matrix checks. compute/q14/certificate.json contains both rational witnesses. The replay uses Python's standard library and Rust, and rejects missing or damaged certificates. No earlier enumeration is required.

  7. Proven vs still open — dent:

Nc(Z)<1.1005Z+3.933Z1/3(Z≥4).N_c(Z)<1.1005Z+3.933Z^{1/3}\qquad(Z\ge4).

The leading coefficient improves 1.1006. The bounded-excess conjecture remains open. The campaign stopped with the certified improvement; larger partitions and stronger targets were not searched.

The remaining degree of freedom was the partition size: a smaller reweighting error might let the compact estimate reach the existing 10/1110/11 cutoff. The proposed calculation used 40 bins and target 0.91240.9124. This was a candidate, not a computed lower bound.

Dependency setup failed on sandbox DNS, and the escalated tool call remained pending until the cutoff interruption. There was no numerical false start, useful solver failure, or new argument to report: the SDP did not run. The completed computer work was the independent Python and Rust replay of q14. Its leading 1.10051.1005 remains certified; the proposed 1.11.1 and bounded excess remain unproved.
