Attack log — determine R(5,5)R(5,5)

2026-08-17 — start

Plan

  1. Independently verify the 656 graphs are (5,5,42)(5,5,42) and that none extend by one vertex.
  2. Exhaust circulants (hence all vertex-transitive graphs of prime order 43) on 43, 44, 45 vertices. Harborth–Krause already imply no cyclic improvement of the lower bound; the census is a checkable residue, not a new bound.
  3. Search structured 43-vertex families that are not already closed by the cyclic census: involution-symmetric graphs, small edge-flip balls around the 656, Cayley graphs on non-cyclic groups of order 42/44.
  4. Do not claim a dent from a SAT timeout.

2026-08-17 — published 656, independently checked

2026-08-17 — none of the 656 extend

2026-08-17 — circulant census

compute/circulant_census.c, legal degrees from R(4,5)=25R(4,5)=25. Independently re-checked by r55lib.is_ramsey on every reported HIT.

2026-08-17 — involution-symmetric 43

Result

No 43-vertex (5,5)(5,5)-graph. No nonexistence proof at 45. Published record still 43≤R(5,5)≤4643\le R(5,5)\le 46.

Documented residue, independently replayable:

Do not cite this folder as a bound.

2026-08-17 — one-flip and Seidel

2026-08-17 — Cayley census on all six groups of order 42

Group laws checked by check_groups.py (identity, inverses, full associativity). Degree window [17,24]. Inverse-closed connection sets only.

There is no legal-degree undirected Cayley (5,5)-graph of order 42. Combined with the prime-order circulant census: no Cayley (5,5)-graph of order 43 either. This is not a bound on R(5,5)R(5,5): the 656 published graphs are non-Cayley.

Python independently replayed the circulant zeros at 42 and 43 (certs/py_circulant_{42,43}.json, 145s / 150s, same 1167322 legal connection sets).

2026-08-27 — q1, after the algebraic census

House unchanged: dent = a certified 43-vertex (5,5)(5,5)-graph, a nonexistence proof at 45 with an independently checkable log, or a documented residue. Isolated SAT timeouts are not a dent.

Fetched again, before searching:

Parent replay compute/replay.sh plus python3 verify_mckay.py: 328+328 ok, none extend, circulant 42/43 empty, 1-WL flip types and Seidel isolation unchanged.

q1 searches (code in compute/q1/):

Python replayed C11⋊C4C_{11}\rtimes C_4 and C3×C15C_3\times C_{15} with the same leaf counts (q1/certs/py_{c11c4,c3c15}.json). There is no legal-degree undirected Cayley (5,5)(5,5)-graph of order 44 or 45.

2026-08-27 — result

No 43-vertex (5,5)(5,5)-graph. No 44- or 45-vertex Cayley (5,5)(5,5)-graph. No nonexistence proof at 45. Published record still 43≤R(5,5)≤4643\le R(5,5)\le 46.

Documented residue, independently replayable from compute/q1/:

Do not cite this folder as a bound. Cert: compute/q1/certs/q1_summary.json.

2026-08-28 — q2

The session ended before the wrap. Interval still 43≤R(5,5)≤4643\le R(5,5)\le 46. No 43-vertex (5,5)(5,5)-graph. No nonexistence proof at 45. Residue, independently replayable from compute/q2/.

Do not cite this folder as a bound. Cert: compute/q2/certs/q2_summary.json. Replay: cd compute/q2 && ./run_all.sh.

2026-08-29 — q3 order-7 leftover

House unchanged: a timeout or a restriction on a hypothetical automorphism group is residue, not a dent. The published interval remains 43≤R(5,5)≤4643\le R(5,5)\le46.

Reused q2's orbit_sat.py without changing its encoding. The six regenerated maximum-cycle CNFs for orders 2, 3, 5, and 7 match q2's recorded SHA-256 hashes byte for byte. Plain-CDCL five-minute reruns for the maximum-cycle order-2, order-3, and order-5 representatives remained UNKNOWN.

For an order-7 permutation of type 7c143−7c7^c 1^{43-7c}, choose a fixed vertex and let kk count adjacent 7-cycles. The degree window [18,24][18,24], complementation (k↔c−kk\leftrightarrow c-k), and relabelling of the fixed vertex reduce all feasible values to these representatives:

cc fixed vertices checked kk result
1 36 1 DRAT-UNSAT; covers k=0k=0 by complement
2 29 1, 2 DRAT-UNSAT; covers k=0k=0 by complement
3 22 1, 3 DRAT-UNSAT; covers k=2,0k=2,0 by complement
4 15 1, 2 DRAT-UNSAT; covers k=3k=3 by complement
5 8 2 DRAT-UNSAT; covers k=3k=3 by complement
6 1 3 787-case DRUP-UNSAT

The eight direct representative proofs were independently accepted by the pinned drat-trim. For 76117^6 1^1, the unique fixed vertex has degree 21 and its three adjacent cycles induce 21 vertices with no K4K_4 and no independent 5-set. Under q2's existing symmetry breaking there are exactly 787 assignments to the 30 edge-orbit variables in that neighbourhood. A local DRUP certifies that enumeration as complete; 787 further DRUPs, one for each full cube, all verify against the original q2 CNF plus the cube units. Archive and member hashes are in compute/q3/certs/p7_proofs.json.

Thus no (5,5,43)(5,5,43)-graph has an automorphism of order 7. With q2's exclusions for primes at least 11, Cauchy's theorem leaves only 2, 3, and 5 as possible prime divisors of the automorphism-group order of a hypothetical graph. This does not move either Ramsey endpoint.

2026-08-29 — q3 result

No 43-vertex (5,5)(5,5)-graph found. No nonexistence proof at 45. Published record still 43≤R(5,5)≤4643\le R(5,5)\le46.

Documented residue, independently replayable from compute/q3/:

2026-08-29 — q4 leftover orders 2, 3, and 5

House unchanged. A stored DRAT is a restriction on a hypothetical automorphism, not a bound on R(5,5)R(5,5). A timeout is residue. The published interval remains 43≤R(5,5)≤4643\le R(5,5)\le46.

Reused q2's orbit_sat.py without changing the encoding. The five maximum-cycle CNF hashes from q2/q3 still match. Degree window and complementation give 142 leftover representatives: 86 of order 2, 42 of order 3, and 14 of order 5.

kissat --unsat --seed=17 produced independently checked DRAT proofs for two cycle types:

cycle type checked kk certificate
561135^6 1^{13} 2, 3 DRAT-UNSAT; complementation covers 4
57185^7 1^8 3 DRAT-UNSAT; complementation covers 4

Replay of both stored proofs: cd compute/q4 && ./run_all.sh prints VERIFIED for p5_c6_k2, p5_c6_k3, and p5_c7_k3.

The other twelve order-5 representatives timed out, including the maximum-cycle formula 58135^8 1^3 at fifteen minutes. One high-cycle order-3 representative (313143^{13}1^{4}, k=6k=6) also timed out. Orders 2 and 3, and the remaining order-5 types, are unfinished. No (5,5,43)(5,5,43)-graph was decoded.

2026-08-29 — q4 result

No 43-vertex (5,5)(5,5)-graph. No nonexistence proof at 45. Published record still 43≤R(5,5)≤4643\le R(5,5)\le46.

Documented residue, independently replayable from compute/q4/:

2026-08-29 — leftover SAT after certified 5^6 and 5^7

House unchanged. q4 is on main as fdc22a0. The leftover is the five maximum-cycle order-2/3/5 representatives plus the 139 degree-feasible cases that q4 did not close.

The five maximum-cycle CNF hashes from q2/q3/q4 still match.

kissat --unsat --seed=17 produced an independently checked DRAT for one leftover cycle type:

cycle type checked kk certificate
541235^4 1^{23} 4 DRAT-UNSAT; complementation covers 0

The trimmed proof is 829MB. gzip -9 is 119MB, over GitHub's blob limit. The stored file is xz -9 (93MB), SHA-256 acd7777a97d3323041d459b4357cbcdf94f8fc9b2d68da93f4051379a4785eba.

Independent replay: cd compute/q5 && ./run_all.sh prints VERIFIED for p5_c4_k4.

The five maximum-cycle representatives timed out at thirty minutes, as did 541235^4 1^{23} at k=1k=1 and k=2k=2, and 313143^{13}1^{4} at k=6k=6. No (5,5,43)(5,5,43)-graph was decoded.

2026-08-29 — leftover SAT result

No 43-vertex (5,5)(5,5)-graph. No nonexistence proof at 45. Published record still 43≤R(5,5)≤4643\le R(5,5)\le46.

2026-08-29 — leftover SAT after certified 5^4 at k=4

House unchanged. q5 is on main as 25d07b4. The leftover is 138 degree-feasible representatives after skipping the four independently replayed names.

The five maximum-cycle CNF hashes from q2/q3/q4 still match. The 555^5 CNF hashes match q4's recorded builds.

q4 had given 551185^5 1^{18} only 600s. Lengthening to 3600s with kissat --unsat --seed=17 produced an independently checked DRAT for one leftover cycle type:

cycle type checked kk certificate
551185^5 1^{18} 2 DRAT-UNSAT; complementation covers 3

UNSAT in 867s. The trimmed proof is 357MB. gzip -9 is 57MB, SHA-256 2aa59d8e171ffcfeea7ad446fbcaafbf45b2e5af45f2c08742cf53a32c0ca46d.

Independent replay: cd compute/q6 && ./run_all.sh prints VERIFIED for p5_c5_k2.

The sibling k=1k=1 representative timed out at sixty minutes. 535^3 at k=1k=1 and k=3k=3, 312173^{12}1^{7} at k=6k=6, and 313143^{13}1^{4} at k=5k=5 timed out at thirty minutes. The eight q5 1800s timeouts were not re-run under the same config. No (5,5,43)(5,5,43)-graph was decoded.

2026-08-29 — leftover SAT after 5^5 at k=2 result

No 43-vertex (5,5)(5,5)-graph. No nonexistence proof at 45. Published record still 43≤R(5,5)≤4643\le R(5,5)\le46.

2026-08-29 — leftover SAT after certified 5^5 at k=2

House unchanged. q6 is on main as 4352c20. The leftover is 137 degree-feasible representatives after skipping the five independently replayed names.

The five maximum-cycle CNF hashes from q2/q3/q4 still match. The 555^5 at k=1k=1 CNF hash matches q6.

kissat --unsat --seed=17 on 551185^5 1^{18} at k=1k=1 printed s UNSATISFIABLE in 7575s (q6 had timed this name out at 3600s). The raw DRAT is 11033169135 bytes, SHA-256 89fde05597fabd99ddd64a0e1b08baf02a5df02888c0f1d5f86b4c9f0adea694. drat-trim -l produced a 4123082549-byte trimmed proof, SHA-256 d1f770b0b7c50ca2bb08a4d8872b4bc21a17bda8401cdef9360267e071df8574. That is over GitHub's blob limit. The proof is not stored. The independent check of the trimmed file was still running at wrap and was stopped. This is not an independently replayed certificate.
