Attack log — a long gap in a dilate modulo a prime

Green, 100 Open Problems (update Dec 2025), Problem 32: let be prime and of size . Is there a dilate of with a gap of length ? Comments: Shakan [280] used the polynomial method to replace 100 by 2, “but this appears to be the limit of his method”. Variants with recover Szemerédi () or Dirichlet Bohr sets (). The finite-field model is easy by averaging. A positive answer would not automatically improve Green #31, because it is not known that infinitely many primes admit a Sidon set of size .

The list citation
arXiv:2205.14038/ “On higher moments of Fourier coefficients” is wrong. That id is Jiang–Cai–Wu et al., Quantum Simulation of the Two-Dimensional Weyl Equation (quant-ph). The paper Green actually cites isGeorge Shakan, A large gap in a dilate of a set, arXiv:2004.14828, SIAM J. Discrete Math. 34 (2020), 2553–2555, doi:10.1137/20M1335030.
Theorem 1: if , then
equivalently , where is the longest run of consecutive misses and . For this is a gap of . SIAM “Cited By” is empty (accessed 2026-08-17). No later improvement of the universal leading constant 2 found.
-
Shakan’s argument is Rédei / Alon: meets every line with ; the vanishing polynomial is ; the top homogeneous slice gives ; then divides the Wronskian of degree . The 2 is exactly . Green’s “limit of the method” is this degree count: at there are no forced middle coefficients. Ordinary vs discrete derivatives, or from cancelled leading terms, only moves . Isolated small- tables are not a dent unless they imply a larger universal .

Related, not a replacement: Di Benedetto–Solymosi–White, arXiv:2001.06994 (Rédei–Szőnyi for cartesian products / directions). Korsky, arXiv:2606.01780, hitting -APs in at (linear interval, not ). Formal-conjectures #1588 is a Lean ticket, no mathematics.
Published record I must beat: Shakan’s universal 2. A construction with would show that 2 cannot be replaced by . A proof that every of size has some dilate missing with a fixed is the dent. .
2026-08-17 — tonight’s handles
- Re-derive Shakan and see whether the unused interval structure of (rising factorials / binomial polynomials) improves the Wronskian degree. The written proof uses only that is a cartesian product.
- Structure vs randomness: rank- GAPs collapse under Dirichlet (some dilate sits in an interval of length ); random / Sidon / small multiplicative subgroups should have . If the minimum really tracks , that is a dent (). If some algebraic family stays at , 2 may be sharp.
- Exact for small by SAT (hitting all -APs) and constructions + local search for larger . Tables are residue unless they force a lifting argument.
Starting with (1) and a compute census, then (2).
2026-08-17 — dictionary
- : max such that some translate of misses . Equivalently one less than the longest circular run of misses, equivalently the longest arithmetic progression in (any difference) after undoing a dilate.
- = length of the longest AP contained in .
- Green #32: every of size has containing an AP of length .
- Shakan: every of size has containing an AP of length .
- Hitting-set dual: = min size of a set meeting every -term AP. Shakan . A universal is .
2026-08-17 — dictionary check, then Shakan's 2 is a degree wall
Re-derived the proof. Set , , , . Alon gives . The top homogeneous slice is with . Then divides the Wronskian , and . Cancelled leading terms actually give , which only rearranges the . The comparison is exactly .
The 2 is in . To get leading constant one needs , so wants and wants . Nothing in the homogeneous slice forces that.
Worse: at with , one has , so the “middle coefficients” of that would have to vanish sit in an empty range. There are no conditions for . Green’s “limit of the method” is this empty middle, not a missing lemma.
The interval structure of is thrown away when
is replaced by . That is the unused
degree of freedom. A direct 2-variable experiment
(poly_experiment.py) on , confirms
vanishes on precisely when , as it
must: the full restates the hitting condition and does not
improve the degree bound.
If (legal by translation), . At the scale this is still , so the reduction does not go away.
2026-08-17 — Dirichlet / structure-vs-randomness, no √p dent
max_d g(dA) is the length of the longest AP in . Equivalently
is one less than the minimal such that some -set
hits every -AP.
Dirichlet in simultaneous approximations: some dilate of an -set has circular diameter , hence
For each fixed the right-hand side is and . This beats Shakan once , which is Green’s Bohr-set regime already. At one has and the diameter bound exceeds . No clustering, no dent.
Energy / Freiman: sets with are almost APs and have some dilate with gap , huge. Random sets of size have energy and typical max-gap , also huge. The dangerous sets sit in the middle and are exactly the ones Shakan treats. Rank-2 Bohr sets / GAPs collapse by 2-dimensional Dirichlet to diameter , complementary gap , so they are not extremal for minimising .
Cauchy–Schwarz on occupancy recovers only the pigeonhole . Inclusion-exclusion with a matching of pairs recovers only .
2026-08-17 — exact G, independently checked
SAT encoding: has iff hits every
-AP. Binary search , symmetry , Glucose4,
cardinality via sequential counters (sat_exact.py).
Exact values for :

| 71 | 8 | 26 | 15.75 | 2.930 | 3.086 |
Full table in compute/certs/sat_G.jsonl. Every witness recomputed
from scratch (verify_sat_witnesses.py). Enumeration of all
agrees through
(enum_diagonal.py). verify.py checks Shakan on every nonempty
proper subset of for .
Fixed- enumerations: climbs from 1.2 to 2.76 at , consistent with Dirichlet . reaches 2.97 at . Extra on the diagonal is order , which would be a leading-constant 3 if it persisted, and would be slack if it died. The table does not decide.
2026-08-17 — constructions are not a 2+o(1) family
Local search upper bounds on sit at ratio – for , slightly above the SAT values where both exist. Random / geometric / jittered / equally-spaced all have some dilate that clusters (equally-spaced collapses to an interval). Multiplicative subgroups of size look random-like additively and have large max-gap. Singer difference sets (prime , ) match SAT at , then at , , give , ratio . Not a family.
Greedy hitting sets for need more than vertices, as Shakan requires. For greedy is sometimes at most , sometimes not, and is suboptimal versus SAT.
2026-08-17 — stop
No proof that every of size has a dilate missing with a fixed . No infinite family with . Shakan’s 2 is still the published universal leading constant. The SAT table and the failed homogeneous / Dirichlet / energy / CS attempts are the residue. The interval structure of remains the live handle, unused.
2026-08-27 — q1, replay first
Fetched Green #32 (PDF) and Shakan 2004.14828 before searching.
Confirmed 2205.14038 is the Weyl-equation paper. Parent
compute/run_all.sh replays: Shakan holds on every proper nonempty
subset for ; every stored SAT witness recomputes; enum
matches SAT through .
Work lives in compute/q1/. Three handles: the unused rising
factorials, a SAT push past , and more families that might
sit at .
2026-08-27 — rising factorials saturate the Alon degree
wronskian_slice.py rebuilds on every stored SAT
witness at . For every prime one already has
, so the “middle coefficient” list is empty at the
actual , not only at hypothetical . The Wronskian still
satisfies and ; there is slack
in the upper bound but not enough to force a larger .
The full rising was expanded for
. It vanishes on (remainder 0), and the
Alon degrees of equal on the nose (max_u_tot = max_v_tot = k). The Stirling terms occupy the full worst-case degree. They
are not a leftover that a sharper can spend.
Differentiating the top slice recovers the degree- Stirling slice, so that slice is not an independent equation. BSW’s Rédei– Szőnyi direction bound is a different problem (and is tight on rectangles). Incidence geometry on versus all non-vertical lines is against a incidence demand; no contradiction at or .
2026-08-27 — SAT past 71 is residue
Downward Glucose4 walk, hard process kill (SIGALRM interrupt()
does not stop Glucose). SAT near the local-search upper bound is
cheap; the first timeout is the wall.
| p | n | G_upper | ratio | first timeout T | shakan |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 73 | 9 | 24 | 2.959 | exact (Cadical UNSAT at in 165s) | 14.22 |
| 79 | 9 | 26 | 2.962 | 26 (60s) | 15.56 |
| 83 | 9 | 27 | 2.928 | 27 (60s) | 16.44 |
| 89 | 9 | 30 | 3.034 | 30 (60s) | 17.78 |
Witnesses in q1/certs/sat_extend.jsonl. Cadical proved
UNSAT at in 165s after a 90s timeout on Glucose4/42, so
is exact (ratio ). That row is in
compute/certs/sat_G.jsonl. The next primes still have only upper
bounds; those timeouts are residue. No lifting pattern: sits
on the same – plateau as . One new
exact row is not a universal .
2026-08-27 — no family through
constructions_q1.py: quadratic rulers, Paley prefixes, cyclotomic
cosets, two-scale grids, the Singer orbit in
(gap 27, ratio ), and a longer anneal.
Best diagonal ratios climb from at to – by
. Subgroups sometimes win a single (e.g. ,
ratio ) and then lose. No infinite family with
.
2026-08-27 — stop
No certified universal . No construction that meets Shakan on infinitely many primes. Exact extends the table by one prime and does not lift. Shakan’s 2 is still the published leading constant. The q1 leftover is a degree-saturation of the rising factorials, that one new exact row, SAT upper bounds at , and a construction table through . The live handle is no longer “expand and read degrees”; those degrees are full.
